Over the years I have read thousands of pages about Tierra del Fuego.
Many sleepless nights were rendered bearable and even pleasant in this way.
Once - alas, all too briefly - I was able to go there, and between gusts of wind
and showers of rain everything I had read about it was confirmed.
Images, landscapes and faces continued to stray into my thoughts.
Until I came across Patrick Bollen's photographs. They took me right back.
I was in that ship in the Beagle Channel again. I could see Navarino island on the far shore.
I recognized the people and walked through the streets. I looked at the windswept light
and savoured the smell of land and sea. Of houses and buildings.
Of grossly overheated rooms. Of a past that always weighs down on the present.
This book will be in my hands on many more nights.
Because every photograph is a long story in itself
